Grit & Silk is now just a few weeks away!

Sotto Voce is thrilled to be wrapping up our second season with a unique two-night concert series, in collaboration with visiting Korean ensemble, Studio frische klänge.

The first night of the series, entitled “Grit & Silk” will feature Claude Debussy’s 30-minute opera, L’enfant prodigue. While the opera is based on the Biblical parable of the Prodigal Son, this retelling of the story focuses on the emotions of the human characters, rather than on conveying a moral message. In fact, the opera focuses on the grief and radical love of the Mother in the Prodigal Family, who doesn’t even get a mention in the original story. Sotto Voce’s opera nouveau approach also incorporates Korean zither music, Debussy art songs, and dance into a Prelude that will bring the full performance closer to an hour in duration. The Prelude aims to tell the story of the Son’s journey into the world and demonstrate his struggle between Ego desires and a more relationship-oriented worldview.

Sotto Voce is thrilled to be featuring returning vocalists Beth White (Alisa in Lucia di Lammermoor, Second Lady in The Magic Flute) as the Mother, Tyler Huk (Normanno in Lucia di Lammermoor, Tamino in The Magic Flute) as the Son, Jamie Gangemi (Second Spirit in The Magic Flute, The Monitor in Suor Angelica) as the Son’s Light Angel, and Ky ver Hoef (Priest in The Magic Flute, Bass Chorister in Lucia di Lammermoor) as his Dark Angel. We are also excited to introduce Brian J. Alvarado as the Father, and to be collaborating with the Avanti! chamber orchestra, as well as choreographer Kerry Ring and her dancers from the UB Department of Theatre and Dance.

THANK YOU to everyone who made Lucia di Lammermoor a *raving* success!

On Friday March 28th, 2025 at 7pm and Sunday March 30th, 2025 at 5pm, Sotto Voce unveiled what music critic Peter Hall referred to in his review as “Bel Canto Opera Brilliance” with our take on Donizetti’s Lucia di Lammermoor. We owe the success of this production to all our artists, board members, volunteers, donors, community partners, and audience members. It truly takes a village to put on a show like this and we were so thrilled with the positive reception to all our hard work.

One of our favorite quotes from Peter Halls’s review was this:

“What voices! Bel canto promises us soaring, lyrical lines that convey deep emotion, all while we witness exceptional skill with intricate melodies and elaborate embellishments. It’s not just deep emotion and it’s not just technical dazzle. It’s both at the same time, which is a high-wire act. And boy did these people deliver.”

It was truly our pleasure to share this show and we can’t wait to share others with you soon! Stay tuned to our TICKETS page for information about our last show of the season – Debussy’s L’Enfant Prodigue – and our next season’s offering – our annual Fall Gala, Mascagni’s Cavalleria Rusticana, and Beethoven’s Fidelio, as well as concerts and outreach events.

If you’d like to join our artistic team, stay tuned to our OPPORTUNITIES page for information about how to audition for us.

ABOUT THE SHOW

Under the visionary leadership of Stage Director Alex Huddleston and musical direction of master bel canto pedagogue and internationally acclaimed tenor Arturo Spinetti, Lucia will be presented in a bold new light, featuring athletic vocals in an immersive and imaginative staging, including an original narration provided by the character “Sir Walter Scott.”

The historical Walter Scott authored the novel “The Bride of Lammermoor”  in 1819 – the source text that inspired the creation of the opera in 1835 – and his presence as a character in our production “raises the veil,” helping to drive the narrative of this real-life murder scandal that rocked 17th century Scotland.

The drama culminates in the famous “mad scene” – quoted in such popular culture references as the movie “The Fifth Element” – and features some of opera’s most intense and expressive vocals.

What a way to start our second season!

Thank you so much to all our participating artists, board members, volunteers, donors, and audience members who supported the kick-off of our 2024-5 season with our FALL 2024 GALA CELEBRATION! We had about 125 people in attendance and raised a total of $7,500 towards our $25,000 goal for our March 2025 production of Lucia di Lammermoor. These funds will help us to cover some of the production’s most essential costs and we couldn’t be more grateful for your support! We were also thrilled to honor local opera legend Frank Scinta, and to present our vision of “opera nouveau” not only with live performances, but cinematically produced videos, voiceovers, and words from Gala Co-Chairs Leslie Boldt and Louis Bryant, Opera Sacra Co-Directors Frank Scinta and Father Jack Ledwon, and our visionary Stage and Film Director Dr. Alex Huddleston.

Now, our team is due for a rest, but we will be back in your inboxes and socials soon to tell you more about what comes next as we work towards our grandest and most striking production yet. In the meantime, check out some Gala stills below, highlighting the beautiful artists at the heart of our collective, as well as the stunning staging and lighting conceived of by Alex in the beautiful space of our home base – the UU Church of Buffalo. Thank you so much again for supporting opera nouveau. Let’s keep this good energy going TOGETHER!

Sotto Voce’s SUOR ANGELICA is coming your way!

We are thrilled to announce that our next production will be Giacomo Puccini’s stunning one-act opera Suor Angelica. Performances will be Friday June 28th at 7pm and Sunday June 30th at 3pm at St. Joseph University Parish in Buffalo NY.

This will be our first official opera production beyond the walls of the UU Church of Buffalo, and we are so honored to be able to present it at St. Joseph University Parish. Bringing this story to life in a space very near to its convent setting forwards our vision of creating unique productions that highlight the many beautiful historic space around Buffalo. St. Joseph was also host to another innovative local opera company – the legendary Opera Sacra, active from 1975 to 2015. We are thrilled to be taking up their torch with this show.

Suor Angelica is an ideal vehicle to highlight the vocal talents of our core team of artists, as well as an opportunity to welcome new artists into the Sotto Voce family. Our own Founding Director and President Jessie Downs (Pamina in The Magic Flute, Sashatya in her own The Second Sight) will be singing the title role – one that she has performed before and counts among her favorites. Our Queen of the Night Julia Anne Cordani (also Bird Spirit in The Second Sight) will be playing the role of the cheerful Suor Genovieffa. We are also very excited to welcome back Chicago-based mezzo-soprano Ola Rafalo (Diskana in The Second Sight) as the brooding Principessa. In a couple of weeks’ time, we will be holding auditions to determine the rest of our players. If you or someone you know may be interested in auditioning, see our OPPORTUNITIES page for more information.

While you will have to stay tuned for more details about our “opera nouveau” interpretation, know that we will be showcasing not only the beautiful St. Joseph sanctuary and Puccini’s stunning music, but also shining light on how this is truly a “tragedy for all times.” The opera centers around Suor Angelica – a woman who is forced into a convent after having a child out of wedlock. After waiting for seven years for some news from her family, it is revealed that her child has died, and she choses to take her own life in response. Not only is this a moving piece of fiction, but it is a true work of “verismo” or “operatic realism” that unveils the gruesome truth of how society throughout the ages attempts to erase those it sees as unnecessary persons. Despite the opera’s dark themes, its miraculous ending demonstrates the power of faith in redemptive love that can transcend humanity’s punitive institutions.

From all of us at Sotto Voce, we can’t wait to share another special show with you, and we can’t make it happen without your support. Thank you and stay tuned!

Tim Flynn (Sarastro) at the heart of his temple.

This past weekend, our production of W.A. Mozart’s The Magic Flute got off to a ceremonial start! After an impressive first rehearsal with our Three Spirits (Rosa Vu, Jamie Gangemi, and Erin Alexander) and Pamina (Jessie Downs), as well as a fun coaching with our Monostatos (Shaun Doyle), the entire cast gathered for a table read of Alex Huddleston’s adapted screenplay. Laughter abounded as we read through his fresh new take on a classic tale. The very next day, our fabulous director and crew filmed the opening scene of the second act – featuring our regal Sarastro (Tim Flynn) and his Priests (Leo Mitchell, Riley Nahlik, Brad Lessen, Phil Nicolai, Ky VerHoef, Alexander Chervyavsky, and Will Botsford) along with our angsty Tamino (Tyler Huk). This weekend, we are gearing up for more music rehearsals and filming. Stay tuned for more updates as this magical production continues to unfold!
